Abortion

I am pro-life (or, equivalently, anti-murder).

Abortion is wrong. Especially partial birth abortion -- which is nothing short of murder.

[Crosstalk (category)] had an insightful program about abortion on 2007-05-17... [Source: Crosstalk (category)]

Tackled the issue of whether we should abort our children before they are born just because they have some imperfection (a deformity or a mental problem, or whatever, ...)

The guest, and many other people who called in, talked about how they were told by their doctor (of all people) during their pregnancy that they should abort their child. These people said "no!" and glad that they did. They are living testimonies of what joy can be had by going through with a birth, even if your child turns out to have some imperfection, which some of these mothers' children did.

A lot of them reported that their child was prayed for during the pregnancy, and they believed that God answered their prayers and gave them a healthy child in answer to prayer...

Some of them were pleased to report that their child was born without any problems, despite the dire warnings their doctors gave them. Others reported that their babies were born with some kind of problem (usually not as bad as what was predicted though) and that they still wake up each morning thankful for their wonderful son or daughter.

Many of them reported on how their baby grew up to be a straight-A student, a very capable person, simply a delight to have. It was evident that they all loved their child very much.

Not discussed, however, was how it would work out for good if some mother who wasn't very interesting in loving an imperfect child, went ahead with a birth instead of aborting. Would that still have a happy ending?

See Abortion / Should the government making laws forbidding it?

Some of the mothers reported that the doctors recommended that they take certain tests, but when they explained the risks involved in the procedure, they mentioned that it may increase the chance of [a deformity / an abortion].

Most of the mothers who called and had an experience like that, reported that they said "no!" to the procedure. They would rather take the chances involved in not knowing everything about their pregnancy and their unborn baby than risk hurting their child!

One woman said she looked at her chart after having declined some of these tests, and the [nurse] had written "not interested in pregnancy management". "Pregnancy management"?? At the risk of damaging your own child??

There was discussion about a somewhat recent (2003?? or more recently?) victory in Congress, about a bill prohibiting [partial birth abortions (category)] that passed.

They described exactly what a partial birth abortion is, and it was shocking and disgusting to me, who had not heard this before. Apparently the procedure is, while the baby is still in the birth canal, to reach in with a knife/scissors and poke a hole in the baby's head, suck out its brains, and then throw away the baby as if it were trash. That's despicable!

Where in medical school to doctors learn that it's okay to kill innocent babies?

In other news, a blind man was "dismissed" from Congress because he had to have his seeing eye dog with him, because the dog was allegedly "too disturbing". I don't know the details, but I don't see how a seeing-eye dog, whom I'm sure is specifically trained to be well-behaved and not disturbing, could be much of a distraction to the other congressmen.

What happened to the laws/policies/whatever in America designed to give extra accommodation for those with disabilities? It's almost as if the lawmakers who let those bills pass (or helped them pass) don't even believe in the principles of their own laws.

[To do: Need to get details, obviously]

It's hard for me to understand people's intolerance for humans that are imperfect in some way. Perhaps those people fail to realize that nobody is perfect. Nope, not even themselves.

We need to have respect for life, and tolerance and love for those who happen to have some kind of imperfection.

Why have a Republican House and Senate never even offered one vote proposing a Constitutional Amendment banning abortion? If the issue were truly important to them as anything but a wedge issue, they would have. The truth is that Republicans have hidden from an honest up or down vote on abortion and will never allow one to take place in the Congress. Instead, they will continue fooling well-intentioned voters who feel strongly about abortion that they "feel their pain," when clearly they do not. Even if the Supreme Court were to do the unlikely and return abortion to the states, it would merely mean that the rich could travel to blue states for abortion, while the poor would have less access to terminating their pregnancies.

The fact is that most Americans, including myself, are uncomfortable with abortions and feel there are too many of them. At the same time, the vast majority of Americans recognize that there are circumstances in which a woman and her doctor should be allowed to make this most difficult decision without government intervention. To return to the days when woman could self-abort without penalty, but to imprison doctors who would help them, seems senseless, especially recognizing that a new abortion law would likely become known as "The Abortions for the Rich-Only Bill."

I have a plan to reduce abortions by encouraging family planning, including abstinence training, combined with a full economic and health care plan that would clearly alleviate the number of abortions. Voters have a choice: Choose Republican rhetoric that will never allow the issue to come to a vote or a real plan to reduce the number of abortions with a program of economic justice. Factually, all the Republican rhetoric and phony issues surrounding abortion have never directly addressed the legality of abortion and have had no or negligible impact on the number of abortions.
