Analysis of successful project: Wikipedia

The reason for Wikipedia's success is largely due to them having a great idea (a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit) and being (I assume) one of the first to implement it and launch their web site.

Can any competition touch it now? I highly doubt it! It's got so much momentum now.

I think this concept is a key to its continued success:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_capital

"Social capital is a core concept in business, economics, organizational behaviour, political science, and sociology, defined as the advantage created by a person's location in a structure of relationships. It explains how some people gain more success in a particular setting through their superior connections to other people."
