[edit] Books other people have recommended

We highly recommend Bruce Schneier's Applied Cryptography (see Resources), which has the advantage of being fairly complete, and is aimed at all audiences, including people with little or no experience in cryptography. Not only does Schneier's book go into more detail than we do, but it also covers fairly esoteric algorithms that we don't cover in this column. For example, if you want to implement a protocol for secure voting -- one where no outsider can figure out who you voted for, and no one can forge a vote -- this book will tell you how to do it.

Kurt Vonnegut, Dave Eggers, Jane Austen, Saul Bellow. I love books. I really, really do. Currently, Godel, Escher, Bach is blowing my mind. Also, popular books about physics and stuff, like The Elegant Universe, and The Fabric of the Cosmos, and A Brief History of Time. And also art books with lots of big, gorgeous, shiny pictures. I think the public library is one of the greatest achievements of humankind.

[edit] Delicious Library

[Good ideas I've had that other people have beat me in implementing (category)]: Yeah, I've wanted something like this for years. I had thought of barcode scanning and integrated lending management for my collections. And then I just found out about Delicious Library on 2007-05-30 09:32, which already implements most of the things I want. But of course it's closed source.

[edit] Features

Delicious Library was applauded for its user interface, as well as several features, including:

  • Use of an iSight camera as a barcode reader.
  • Use of a Bluetooth barcode scanner.
  • Mini Bookshelf Dashboard widget.
  • Use Spotlight to find items quickly.
  • Compatibility with Amazon.com ratings, to suggest other items to a user.
  • Integration with Apple Computer's native Address Book application to allow "lending management".
  • Syncing with an iPod.
  • Use of Voice Search.
  • Shelves or the whole library can be printed.
  • Recommendations of books, movies, CDs or videogames can be sent via email.
  • Custom Collections allow the user to create their own "shelves" to organize their media.

Since then, there are other programs including those for the Windows environment (a media cataloging application software called "Digital Hoard") which have been developed which use webcams with great accuracy to read barcodes and populate the media database with items such as books, movies, etc.

[edit] Entering Media

There are several ways to enter a media item into Delicious Library. The user can:

  • Import their Library from another application (like Bookpedia),
  • Enter the title manually,
  • Enter the ISBN or UPC by hand,
  • Use an iSight to scan the barcode,
  • Use a videocamera connected through FireWire to scan a barcode,
  • Use a Bluetooth enabled barcode scanner (which can purchased directly through Delicious Library itself) to scan a barcode.

The :CueCat barcode scanner was not made to be used with programs like Delicious Library, although there is a way to make it work. This method transforms the CueCat into a device that simply reads the barcode, types it into the screen in the same format as a keyboard types, and then clicks the enter button.

Here are Delicious Monster's directions to enable your CueCat barcode scanner to be used with Delicious Library (as from Delicious-Monster Help):

The USB models has an onboard 16 pin SMD component. This IC will have a serial number on it similar to the following sequence: K130A033 HMS91C7316 0027. Simply lift pin 5 on this device (The small dimple in the lower right-hand corner indicates pin 1). Congratulations, your USB CueCat is now functioning as a commercial barcode scanner.

http://cominded.com/about

I am an avid user and fan of librarything which is a social web 2.0 service for cataloguing your books. This helps you keep track of what books you own and allows you to discover new books and also people - but the discovering people bit does not seem to be something the service is currently strong on. I now have more than 1350 books catalogued.
