[edit] In general
This is about online forums in general -- places and means on the Internet by which people can discuss things and exchange ideas.
Since many people disagree on a lot of things, there is bound to be a lot of disagreement expressed on discussion forums. So some of the challenges of moderators/hosts of forums and the developers of forum software is how to allow and encourage people to share their ideas and opinions in a safe place without being attacked or without it turning into a hostile debate/argument. Which is not to say that debate, argument, disagreement, ... are bad in themselves...

[edit] The name
The word "forums" brings to mind (my mind anyway) bad connotations: namely, clunky, PHP-based discussion forums like phpBB. Most "discussion forums" that I frequent and consider high-quality are actually mailing lists, not (primarily) web-based forums.
However, I suppose there is no better name to call this topic.
"Forums" might be too ambiguous?
Aliases: Forums, Discussion boards
