Donation-supported free web sites

Sometimes you may want to create a site that is completely free to users -- okay, practically all the time -- but sometimes you may want to be free from ads and yet not have to pay for the expenses out of your own pocket.
That's when you might want to consider making your site donation based!
In an idea, micro-payment technology would be ubiquitous and in common use by now. But I haven't noticed that being the case.
So I guess PayPal might be the easiest way to receive donations at the moment...
