You specify a list of alternatives that apply to a specific region of text.
This would probably be stored inline with some special tag (that is normally hidden but might pop up with something if you hover over it).
- when writing a draft, and you aren't sure yet what the best wording is, you can brainstorm, quickly list all your ideas (so you don't forget them), and move on, coming back later and choosing from amongst your alternatives.
- even in a final document, if you feel that the alternatives might be helpful for understanding a section (in case they don't understand the first wording, maybe they will understand the second), but it should be used sparingly, not as a copout for trying to choose the best wording possible
- specifying uncertainty (alternate wordings) in quotes
