[edit] Quotes about it

[Whereas the original compilers of this list of quotes highlighted all the parts that were praise/accolades for their product, I'm not going to do that here. I'm not really interested in reading "This is brilliant" or "I'm a huge fan". I want to know the facts (what it is, what it does, how it works, ...), what features they like about it, and also any bad things (cons) about the product. So that's what I'm going to highlight (underline) in my list of quotes... --— Tyler (]

[...] Wesabe packs in a lot of punch for those inclined to thriftiness. Additionally, Wesabe lets its users manage all of their financial information inside Wesabe, complete with tagging, editing, and rules for purchasing. The cool part about this is that Wesabe leverages user-submitted data to make your own data more readable and usable.

It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with Wesabe. At every point where Quicken stood in the way of my progress with ease-of-use roadblocks, Wesabe makes it painless.

I should note upfront that I don’t have a lot of experience with personal finance management; I haven’t even seen my checkbook in two years, let alone balanced it. [...] I tried using Quicken a few years ago, but found it tedious and in the end it didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know — I’m broke. So let’s just say I was prepared for Wesabe to bore me out of my skull and not much more. But as it turns out, I’m a huge fan of Wesabe.

What a brilliant premise: Wesabe is a new social web app for personal finance, founded by Jason Knight and Marc Hedlund. The idea is that it’s an attempt to harness collective wisdom about finance and spending decisions — both big and small. The biggest problems facing an online site dealing with personal finance data, of course, are privacy and security. Wesabe recognizes this, and they talk about their policies and procedures clearly and plainly. Definitely worth checking out.

I'm proud to have joined Wesabe's advisory board -- Marc's way sharp, and Wesabe's a [...] cool idea. The service anonymizes your financial data and then compares it to others' and figures out ways that you can save money right away, and worked into it is a bunch of community stuff for people who are figuring out how to spend smarter. It's a little like Flickr for your money, or social Consumerist.

Other companies would do well to learn from Wesabe about how to treat a user's data and who owns it. Marc spoke at the Web 2.0 Summit about Open Data and Data Rights; you can learn more about that on the Wesabe blog. Wesabe has done a good job of balancing the needs of privacy versus fostering community via sharing.

[edit] Mvelopes Personal

It's good but it's not perfect, and the end I decided it's not what I'm looking for.

Cons:

  • Closed source
  • Flash-based
  • Cost: $20/month
