[edit] Problem: Millions of Americans are increasingly unhealthy and our society is not doing anything to help the situation
[edit] Deeper/root problem: Many industries profit from people's unhealthiness
- The pharmaceutical industry
- The health-care industry
- Doctors
- Health insurance industry?
- .........
They all benefit from our illness. They all benefit from our pill-popping mentality / prescription-happy doctors / our bad habits, etc.
[edit] Deeper/root problem: Marketing: We're inundated with messages that make us believe our situation is acceptable
Actually, the media/advertising/marketing sends a very mixed message: You need to look like this super-attractive, thin supermodel...but this (unhealthy, fatty, etc.) is what you need to eat.
All the marketing for unhealthy foods / lifestyles leads us impressionable people to all sorts of bad habits.
For example: parents giving their toddlers a bottle of Pepsi to guzzle and teaching them bad habits like drinking soda rather than water at a very young age, and causing those patterns to be impressed into their brains and become a part of their permanent behavior.
How come we don't see ads on TV for healthy food? "Enjoy a luscious, fresh salad and then wash it down with a glass of pure water?"
Because (apparently?) that's not where the big money is. Apparently more money is to be made by advertising/selling packaged/processed foods/drinks than in selling fresh foods (produce) and water.
[edit] Solution: Get people to change their perception. It's not "normal" to be unhealthy and it is not okay.
People need to be convinced that:
- That our bodies were not designed to be treated the way we treat them
- Our unhealthy (rich) diets are killing us!
- Our obesity (which is not part of the Designer's plan for our bodies) causes a host of other health problem: self-esteem/emotional, hearth/cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, joint problems, ...
- We can take responsibility for their own health.
- That we can do something about our health. Most diseases are preventable and most are even reversible.
- And that we should.
- It's not okay to be obese/unhealthy/etc. Just because like 70% of Americans are now obese does not make it okay.
