How to keep cables from becoming a clutter

[edit] Retractable cables?

Perhaps it would help if all cables were retractable and had a container that exerted a slight, constant force to pull them inward. This would hopefully take out the slack, thereby keeping them shorter than they otherwise would be and causing them to go in a more direct route from point A to point B.

It would have to be a slight enough force, however, that it:

  • wouldn't pull the cables out of their plugs
  • wouldn't cause the device at the other end to move -- the device should stay stationary (less force for lighter objects?)
  • wouldn't be bothersome if you're holding something that has a cable going to it.

Cables shouldn't be running across the floor, if possible. You don't want to step on them or get your feet tangled up in them.
