Broadly defined, a matching system is a software system that helps to match those looking for/wanting/seeking a particular thing/skill//etc. with those who are able to provide that thing.


Examples:

Classifieds sites eBay, Craig's List matches those looking to buy/obtain a particular product/object with those who are trying to sell/give away that thing
Singles/dating sites eHarmony, etc. matches those looking for someone to date with others who are looking for someone to date
Job sites monster.com matches employers who are looking for employees with would-be employees who are looking for an employer
Volunteer opportunity sites http://www.volunteermatch.org/ matches would-be volunteers with those organizations who are looking for volunteers
