[edit] Question: Could/should I use it for longer quotations/paraphrases of longer source material?
As in notes/citations from a primary source for use in some second-hand research?
What do these two kinds of quotes have in common?
- they have a source that needs to be accurately recorded
- they have a degree of literal quotation / paraphrase
- they may be reused/included in various documents
It seems like they are common enough that I may want to store them together in one database?
What's the difference then?
One is stand-alone quotes that can be enjoyed/read out of context and be fully appreciated. They are characterized by their witty prose / creative wording / humor / insightfulness.
The other could be called "notes". These are the type of quote you take out of a larger work, perhaps with the intent of including it/citing it in a work of your own. They may not be possible to be appreciated without some context and explanation. They may be longer and drier than stand-alone quotes, but they certainly have their place in the world too.
How to distinguish between the two? Could have a flag on the table ("standalone" or something). Or just require them to be a member of one of two categories (maybe could even be in both?): "Can be used as stand-alone" and "Quote from larger work". I want to be able to use them homogenously, without restriction, but for listing purposes at least, I may want them listed separately. (On a page called "Quotes" that shows my favorite quotes, for example, I'd only want to list the "stand-alone" quotes.)
