But now I am going away to the One who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

We seem to think that it's up to us to try really hard to overcome sin. So we try and we try, as hard as we can ... and we fail ... over and over.
Many of us get so discouraged that we decide that we don't want to add hypocrisy to our already long list of sins. So we leave the church and stop trying...
It's really a tragedy that people think it's somehow up to them to be good enough and not sin...
And it's partly the church's fault -- church members often take it upon themselves to point out people's sins, to set the bar really high, ... There's too much focus on behavior!
But God never said, "behave perfectly and you will be saved"! That's righteousness by works, and it is not what the Bible teaches.
If all that was required to be saved was to follow all 10 commandments, then [...]
But it's not obeying the commandments that saves us... Rather, it is believing in and knowing Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Obedience is important. And those who know and trust God will obey. But that is the result of the relationship, not the [...].
It is only through the work and power of the Holy Spirit in us that we can be free of sin.
It is the Holy Spirit that cleanses us. We don't cleanse ourselves.
Our part is to continually invite the Holy Spirit into our lives each day, to surrender your life to him each day. God's part is to start cleansing, once we invite him to.
[edit] Who is the Holy Spirit?
He is God; he is part of the Godhead. He is a person. He is able to take on physical form (for example, of a dove). He has a will. He has emotions. We are able to grieve him. He prays for us [reference?].

[edit] What is sin?
Sin is not believing in God, not trusting him. It is trying to do it all ourselves.
[edit] Are we really expected to be sinless?
Yes!
As examples of people in the Bible who were sinless their whole lives:
- Enoch
- Elisha
- ...
There are also examples of many people in the Bible who sinned but then repented, and God still called them [righteous]...
- Moses
- David
- ...
So don't be discouraged just because you have messed up and sinned!
The only way that we sin is when we stop looking to Jesus, leaning on Jesus, and we start trying to become righteous on our own. That just doesn't work!
Trust in Jesus alone, who alone (or the HS?) can cleanse you from unrighteousness!
