[edit] Upgrades/Downgrades

Upgrades

  • intact_formatting (true or false): indicates that any and all formatting (fixed-width fonts, italics, etc.) from the original has been preserved (doesn't prevent us from adding underlines and other allowed formatting)
  • exact (true or false) [Deprecated]: Exact quote (upgrade): the exact words from the original (including typos) have been preserved. It is allowed to use ellipses to leave things out and brackets to indicate modifications; the "exact quote" indication just promises that other than the indicated changes, no changes have been made to the original. Update: Now I'm thinking that this should be the default and should always be assumed to be true. Rather than setting exact to "false", please list all changes that have been made. That would be much more useful. List everything that you have done to "taint" it.

Downgrades:

  • tainted (true or false): Tainted quote: nearly the same as an exact quote, but one or more very minor modifications have made to the content. For example:
    • Fixed typos
  • almost (true or false): Almost-quote: nearly a quote, but one or more words may have been changed (never intentionally; simply because you couldn't remember the exact wording, usually); the original intent and meaning of the quote is guaranteed to remain intact (some goes for all higher levels)
  • attempted (true or false): Attempted quote: usually this means you're trying to remember the wording as best you could, but you know you messed it up a bit; you may even have slight doubts about if all the same meaning has been preserved; very similar to almost-quote, just a tiny notch lower
  • paraphrase (true or false): Paraphrase: we all know what a paraphrase is.
  • condensation (true or false): allows you to omit entire sections/paragraphs without indicating those omissions; deletions only, no additions (except indicated omissions)

More major downgrades / deviations:

  • modified (true or false): Modified quote/Derived content: The quote has been more than just tainted; it's been downright changed. So it's no longer even a "quotation" now, technically. It has just entered the realm of "derived work". Some of the content may still be quoted verbatim, but some of it is your words. And some of their wording may have been changed / replaced with your words, if you thought you could say parts of it better than they did.
    • This is a kind of messy classification and should be avoided if it all possible. It's really mainly meant for when you're too lazy to mark up every little piece that's a direct quote and you just want to say "I got this material from this source, that's what it's based on, but I've added to and modified it since" and be done with it. (Solution? Make it easier to mark up which parts are direct quotes, etc. so that the temptation to be lazy is not as strong!)
    • Should I create a new template for this?? {{Derived content}}, {{Derived text}}, {{Derived from}})??

[edit] To do: Make type-of-quote indicator pretty, tiny, and floated/absolute-positioned to the right

Until that's done, I've temporarily removed this:

{{section category|Exact quotations|[[Template:Quotation|Exact quotation]]}} | }}
