Theology/We are judged according to what we know

How much does God expect us to know about the Bible?

There are people who get degrees in theology, who make it their life's work to study the Bible. They put the rest of us to shame. Is God more pleased with these Bible scholars than he is with those of us who know very little about the Bible?

This is, I think, a very important question. For if God expects us to be expert Bible scholars--or if that is a prerequisite for going to heaven--then a lot of us are in big trouble!

Fortunately, I don't think we will be judged according to what we don't know, but by what we do know. Is there support for this theory in the Bible?

John 9:41 (NIV):

Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

John 15:22 (NIV):

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.

John 15:24 (NIV):

If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.

John 19:10-11 (NIV):

"Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"
Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
