[edit] Question: if you have a backlog (e-mail, etc.), is it better to work from newest to oldest or oldest to newest?
The risk of working from newest to oldest, of course, is that new things will keep on coming in even as you work back to the old items.
But if you work from oldest to newest, you may waste time dealing with old items that don't matter as much right now at the expense of not handling quickly enough the newer items that come in.
[edit] Tip: Delayed responses can help you budget time
If, rather than replying to an ongoing e-mail conversation immediately when you receive it, you postpone it two days, that gives you more time to work on other things in the meantime. The other participants in the conversation can probably wait a few days for your reply.
