The main issues of interest to me right now: plagiarism and w:copyright infringement (un-fair use).

Of the two, w:copyright infringement is to me by far the more confusing, subjective, and hardest to avoid.

Plagiarism, in contrast, seems trivially easy to avoid: simply give ample credit/attribution to any material that you use as a part of your writing! It's easy to give somebody credit for their quotable words or good ideas; it's much harder to resist the temptation to incorporate those words are ideas into one's own work.

"My Word's Worth"

My occasional column on books, words, libraries, American culture, and whatever happens to interest me. The complete archive (some 300 columns) is available.

NOTE: My thinking is always a work in progress. You could mentally insert all my columns in between these two sentences: "This is something I've been thinking about," and "Does this make any sense to you?" I welcome your thoughts. Please send your comments about these columns to: marylaine at netexpress.net. Since I've written a lot of these, some of them many years ago, help me out by telling me which column you're referring to.

I'll write columns here whenever I really want to share an idea with you and can find time to write them . If you want to be notified when a new one is up, send me an e-mail and include "My Word's Worth" in the subject line.
